Dissertation Proofreading and Editing
Your dissertation is a substantial and, I hope, fascinating piece of work that has dominated your thoughts for months. Before you submit, would you like me to check it over for you so that you can be sure there are no mistakes you may have missed and that you have expressed yourself clearly?
As I have broad experience in proofreading and editing, and edit a huge range of journal articles for the academic publisher MDPI, I am very comfortable with dissertations in all subject areas. My most recent commissions were for dissertations in the fields of economics, environmental science, health (COVID-19), human resources management and education. However, I am most frequently asked by students to help with dissertations in the following areas, as I have higher degrees, knowledge and work experience that relate to these disciplines:
-
Applied linguistics
-
Business
-
Education, especially related to overseas students
-
Management
-
Marketing
-
Media and communications
-
Politics
-
Public policy, especially related to health
What is the difference between proofreading and editing?
Proofreading includes fixing language issues such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice and style. Editing, on the other hand, focuses on making sure that the meaning and logic of your work are crystal clear; this involves carefully reviewing your dissertation as a whole, at the paragraph level, and the sentence level to make sure that your dissertation is coherent (i.e. it makes sense and is logical) and cohesive (i.e. your ideas are joined up properly) and that you express yourself clearly in a manner that conforms to the expectations of your lecturers. In my experience, it is the editing element that adds the most value; it is something that Grammarly and ChatGPT cannot do!
